Offwind for iPhone

Move around the chart

Pan, zoom and turn the chart, switch its orientation, and get back to the boat.

The chart is the same in both halves of the app. In the cockpit it is the Helm. Ashore it is the Chart tab. Its controls sit in fixed places round the edge so most of the screen stays chart.

The controls

  • The toolbar. One slim column down the right edge. From the top: Recentre (only while you have panned away), the compass rose, Wx, Mid (declutter), Chart (the chart menu), and zoom + and −. Where the chart is short, the toolbar keeps the most needed buttons and drops the rest.
  • The route strip. Bottom left, over the scale bar, while a route is active. It shows the next mark's name with its bearing and distance.
  • The scale bar. Bottom left, always shown.
  • The corner mark. Bottom right, © OSM · NE ⓘ. Tap it for the navigation notice, the data sources and their licences.
  • MOB. Top left, in the cockpit.

Pan, zoom and turn

  • Pan with one finger. A tap can roll about 3 mm and still count as a tap.
  • Zoom with a pinch, a double tap (in), a two-finger tap (out), or the + and − buttons. Zoom moves in steps, with a tick at each one. A pinch that stops between steps settles on the nearer.
  • Turn the chart with two fingers. This works in north up, or after you pan away.

Orientation

Tap the compass rose to step through N up, C up (course up) and H up (heading up). The caption under the rose says which you are in, and the needle always points to north. Course up and heading up turn the chart smoothly rather than jittering in a seaway. You set how much smoothing in Settings › Cockpit › Heading-up damping.

Get back to the boat

Panning stops the chart from following the boat. To return:

  1. Recentre. Tap the location button at the top of the toolbar. It is only there while you are panned away.
  2. The off-screen marker. When the boat is off the chart, a box on the chart's edge points toward it and shows how far away it is. Tap it to recentre.
  3. Automatic. The chart recentres by itself after a while and says Recentred. Set the delay, or turn it off, in Settings › Cockpit › Recentre after panning.

While the chart follows the boat, it keeps the boat clear of the buttons and any alarm banner.

Limits

The chart is for planning and situational awareness. It is not an ECDIS and does not meet chart carriage requirements. Use official charts and keep a lookout.
