Offwind for iPhone

Download weather for an area

Draw a box on the chart or follow your route, choose models and layers, check the size, and download.

Weather comes to the phone as a download you choose: where, which models, which layers, and how far ahead. You see the size before anything is sent, and once it arrives it stays on the phone for use offline.

Open the Get tab

On the chart, tap Wx on the toolbar. With no forecast held yet it opens on the Get tab; otherwise tap Get at the top of the Weather panel. From a project, Weather on the chart opens the same place.

If you are not signed in, the tab starts with Sign in to download weather. Importing a GRIB file and satellite mail, further down, work without an account.

Choose and download

  1. Where. With no route, the area is a dashed box on the chart. Drag its corners to size it. Its latitude and longitude are written under Where. Fit the box to the chart puts it back to the visible chart. With a route, choose Box on chart or Along route; along the route it is a corridor sized to the passage at 6 kn.
  2. Models. Tick one or more:
    • GFS: global, 16 days.
    • ECMWF: global, 15 days.
    • AIFS: global, ECMWF's AI model.
    • HRRR: US coast, 2 days, hourly.
    • NAM: North America, 3½ days.
  3. Layers and time. Tick Wind, Gusts, Pressure, Waves and Currents as you need them. Set Hours ahead from 24 h to 10 days. If the models you chose stop sooner, a line says how far they reach.
  4. Check the size. Size shows about how big the download is. Link shows the connection it will use.
  5. Download. Tap Download. The panel says Queued. It shows on the chart as its parts arrive. Progress lines follow underneath.

Parts arrive in the order they are used, so the first hours draw on the chart first, and a download picks up where it left off when the link drops. The server checks the size before sending anything larger than you were shown.

A new connection

The first time the phone uses a link, such as a marina's Wi-Fi or a satellite system, it sends nothing but safety traffic until you say what the link is. The Get tab tells you: Offwind has not used this link yet. Confirm it to download weather over it. Tap Confirm and the link's name. Downloads waiting on it then start. Change what a link may send in More › Link.

Other ways in

Under Held:

  • Import a GRIB file… reads a GRIB from Files or another app.
  • Request by satellite mail composes a request for an email weather service, for when your only link is satellite mail.

Limits

Ticking Gusts or Pressure makes the whole download a GRIB, which the chart draws but the router cannot use. For weather to route on, see Get weather for routing.
