Offwind for iPhone

Check a route before you use it

Read the result, the wind along the track, and the waypoint table, and see how much the answer depends on the forecast.

A computed route is a proposal. Before you arm it or steer it, the Route tab gives you what you need to decide whether you believe it: the weather the boat would sail through, when it reaches each waypoint, and how much the answer moves if the forecast or the polar is a little off.

The result is also drawn on the chart. While the weather shows, a dot on the track marks where the routed boat is at the chart's time; drag the time bar to move it.

Result

The Result panel gives Recommended, the strategy the router chose; Arrival; Elapsed, in hours; and Distance, in nautical miles. Under them, one row for each strategy it tried, with its elapsed time, distance and status.

Along the route

Below the result:

  1. The meteogram. Wind speed along the track against time, gusts dashed above it, arrows along the top for the wind's direction, and waves underneath when the forecast has them. Ticks mark each waypoint's arrival, and a line marks the chart's time.
  2. The ETA table. A row per waypoint: ETA, TWS, TWA with the tack (P or S), T/G for tacks and gybes on the leg (for example 2T), Sail where the route names one, BSP for boat speed, and nm to go.

On a phone the table shows the next four legs and the finish. Tap All and the number of waypoints to see every row, and Fewer waypoints to fold it again.

These are the same waypoints the app uses when you arm the route or export it, at most 20 legs.

Diagnostics

The Diagnostics panel lists anything the router wants you to know, with cautions and warnings in color.

Sensitivity

For a route solved on the phone, the Sensitivity panel re-solves it with the polar at 90–110% and the wind at 90–120%. Tap Run sensitivity. It works through 11 solves, then lists each one with how much earlier or later it arrives and how far its track moves, or does not finish.

If small changes swing the arrival by hours or move the track miles, the route depends on details of the forecast you should not trust.

Compare and export

Under Keep it:

  • Save for comparison keeps the result under the Name you type. With more than one saved, Compare and the number of saved routes lists them side by side, fastest first.
  • Export GPX shares the route's waypoints to a chartplotter or another app.

For a route solved on the server, Re-run on the server's newest weather solves it again.

Limits

The route is computed on the weather the phone holds. It does not know about a forecast you have not downloaded. Check the age of the forecast on the chart's time bar. See Show weather on the chart.
