Locking the screen or switching to another app is not closing Offwind. It keeps working in the background: navigation, the anchor watch, man overboard, the alarms and the recording all carry on.
Closing means swiping Offwind away in the app switcher. When you do that, Offwind really stops.
What stops
- Navigation, and the location use that goes with it.
- The anchor watch. It does not come back when you open the app again.
- Updating the way back to a man overboard. The mark itself is kept.
- The alarm sound. Alarm notifications are taken off the lock screen, because nothing is watching any more.
- The connection to the boat's instruments.
- The Live Activity on the lock screen.
When you open Offwind again, an active route picks up where it was.
Keep a recording running
A track is the one thing that can outlive a close. Settings › Recording › Keep recording after the app is closed decides. It is on unless you turn it off.
- On. A track that is recording keeps recording, and resumes by itself if iOS restarts Offwind in the background. The lock screen shows only Recording. Everything else stops as above.
- Off. Closing the app ends the recording too, at the moment you close it.
Either way, if Offwind crashes or the phone restarts, an open recording resumes by itself.
When iOS limits the background
If iOS is not letting Offwind run fully in the background, the Safety screen shows When Offwind is closed, with the reason in plain words:
- Alarms stop when Offwind is closed: allow location Always.
- Background App Refresh is off: forecasts and sync wait until Offwind is open.
- Low Power Mode is on: iOS may pause Offwind in the background.
Open Settings takes you to Offwind's page in the iPhone's Settings, where you can change location access and Background App Refresh.
The same warning appears in the GPS item's details in the status strip, as Background limited: see Safety.
