Tap Race in the bar and the phone becomes a race instrument. It is built to be mounted on the mast or a bulkhead and read from the helm: five pages, each one screen tall, with numbers as large as the page allows. Nothing scrolls. You swipe sideways from one page to the next.
The pages
Swipe left and right, or tap a dot under the page.
- Race. The start: countdown, distance to the line, time to the line and time to burn. After the gun it becomes the race screen, and after End, the race's summary. See Start a race and After the gun.
- Shift. Lifts and headers against your reference angle on each tack, with ten minutes of trend. See Track wind shifts.
- Heel. Heel and trim from the phone, with a steadiness indicator. See Heel and trim.
- Line. Ping the pin and the boat, the line's length and bias, and the wind. See Set the start line.
- Course. Right of way, the legs of a loaded course, and the last tack or gybe.
The current page's name sits in a pill among the dots. A red dot on the left of that row, with REC or LIVE, means the camera is running (see Race video); the clock and battery are on the right.
The header
Race mode hides the status strip to give the pages its room. What stays is one row: MOB on the left, then Video, Lock and Setup. At a larger interface size the video button moves into Setup so the row still fits.
Lock works as everywhere else: hold the lock for two seconds to unlock. MOB stays live through the lock.
Made to be read, not touched
The pages are drawn for a phone on a mast: digits fill their space, units sit in the labels (TO LINE m, VMG kn), and the labels themselves are set at the size of an instrument's field names. Buttons are full-size targets for a wet hand, and anything that would lose data, such as Reset or End, needs a press and hold.
Battery
Race mode only runs what it shows. The motion sensors run while the race screen is up or a race is on; the compass only while the app is in the foreground or racing. The screen updates five times a second during a live race and the last 70 seconds of a countdown, and once a second otherwise. Leave the Race tab with no race running and it all stops. The screen stays awake only while a live race is showing.
