Offwind records your track on the phone, with or without a signal, and keeps it in the Log.
Start
Any of these starts a recording. Starting never asks you to confirm.
- Go sailing. Leave Record the track on in the Go sailing or Quick sail sheet, and the track starts with the passage. See Go sailing.
- The status strip. Tap Rec at the left of the strip, on any cockpit screen.
- More › Log. Tap Start recording.
- Siri. Say "Start recording in Offwind". The same action is in the Shortcuts app and can go on the Action Button.
A recording always runs inside a passage. If you start one while you are planning, Offwind opens the cockpit as a quick sail.
See that it is recording
Rec in the status strip turns green and shows the time since the start, for example 1:12:05. Gray Off means nothing is recording; a red ! means the recording has a problem. Recording is the last item the strip ever drops for lack of room.
While it records, the lock screen and the Dynamic Island show Recording.
Stop
Stopping ends the track, so it needs a two-second hold.
- Tap Rec in the status strip. It shows when the recording started and how many positions it has stored, for example Recording since 14:03 · 212 fixes.
- Tap Stop, then hold for two seconds until the ring fills.
You can also stop with Stop recording on More › Log, by saying "Stop recording in Offwind", or by finishing the passage under More (see Finish a passage).
If the phone cannot save the last positions, Offwind keeps recording, says so, and tries to stop again a few seconds later, rather than lose them.
The recorder screen
More › Log shows the recording in detail.
- Profile sets how the track is recorded. Choose it before you start; it cannot change while
recording.
- Race inshore (1 Hz) and Race offshore (1 Hz): a position every second.
- Passage (adaptive): lets the phone trade accuracy for battery.
- Battery saver (5 min): a position about every five minutes, using as little power as possible.
- External GNSS only (1 Hz): the phone's GPS stays off and positions come from the boat's network.
- Location says what the phone's GPS is doing: Receiving, No fix, Location denied.
- Session counts Fixes stored of those received, the Distance, and the latest Position, Accuracy, SOG and COG. After a restart it reads Session (resumed).
- Mark event puts a timestamped event on the track: Start, Mark, Finish, Sail-Change and Note.
Man overboard and pressure alarms are marked on the track by themselves.
Closing the app
Swiping Offwind away keeps a recording going, unless you turn that off. See When you close the app.
