Offwind for iPhone

Turn the phone

Use the Helm upright or on its side, and keep the screen from turning once the boat is moving.

The Helm works upright and on its side. A phone in a cockpit mount sees a lot of heel and slam, so Offwind can also hold the screen still once you are sailing, whatever the phone's own rotation lock says.

Landscape

On its side, the Helm puts the chart and the fields next to each other. The bottom bar moves to a rail down the edge of the screen, and the page dots run down the handle between chart and fields.

  • Move the column. Data column in landscape (Settings › Cockpit) puts the fields on the Left or the Right. The field editor has the same choice on a chart page, as Data column.
  • Resize it. Drag the handle between chart and fields. The page remembers the width.
  • Its own fields. The landscape column is two fields across and three down, with BSP across the top, and keeps its own layout. Edit it with the phone on its side.

Hold the screen still

Orientation in Settings › Cockpit decides when the screen turns:

  • Lock when underway. The starting setting. The screen follows the phone until the boat has been moving faster than half a knot for a minute, then stays the way it is. The strip says Rotation locked. Once the boat has been stopped for a minute it says Rotation free and follows the phone again.
  • Follow the device. Always turns with the phone.
  • Portrait, Landscape, left or Landscape, right. Always that way, for a fixed mount.

Split chart on iPad

On an iPad, a chart page can show an overview beside the close-up chart. Turn on Overview beside the chart for that page in the field editor. The overview shows your boat, the active route and next mark, and the close-up's area as a dashed rectangle, with its own zoom. It sits beside the close-up in landscape and under it in portrait. A phone always shows a single chart.
