Offwind for iPhone

The Safety screen

Where man overboard, the alarms, the anchor watch and the depth alarm live, and what Offwind can and cannot do for you.

Offwind is an aid to navigation. It is not a distress system and never a substitute for seamanship. Positions, instruments and alarms can be wrong, late or missing. Keep a proper lookout, carry official charts, and in an emergency call for help on VHF channel 16 or DSC and use your EPIRB or PLB. You stay responsible for the boat and the crew.

With that said, Offwind does watch a few things for you, and they are all on one screen.

Open it

In the cockpit, tap More, then Safety. You also get there from anywhere else:

  • +1 (or +2, and so on) on the alarm banner opens Safety, where every active alarm is listed.
  • Background limited: see Safety in a status strip item's details opens it too.

What is on it

From the top:

  1. Alarms. Every alarm that is active or waiting for an answer, with Acknowledge and Snooze 5 min. When an alarm is waiting, it comes first so you can answer it without scrolling. See Answer an alarm.
  2. Man overboard. The large MOB button, and once it has been pressed, the way back. An active MOB always stays at the top. See Man overboard.
  3. When Offwind is closed. Shown only when iOS is limiting what Offwind can do in the background. It says what stops and has Open Settings to fix it. See When you close the app.
  4. Anchor watch. The swing circle and Drop anchor here. See Set an anchor watch.
  5. Depth alarm. How shallow is too shallow, and the depth under the keel from your instruments.

The depth alarm

Set Shallow below 2.0 m under the keel with the − and + buttons, in half-meter steps from 0.5 m to 30 m. Underneath it, the panel shows Under keel and the depth now. Less than your setting raises Shallow water, a critical alarm. Depth rising fast raises Shoaling fast.

The depth comes from the boat's depth sounder through your instrument connection. Without one, the panel says No depth from the instruments and the alarm cannot work. If readings stop arriving, you get No depth.

The navigation notice

The notice you accepted the first time you opened Offwind is in Settings, under Safety and privacy: Read the navigation notice.
