Offwind for iPhone

Weather warnings on your route

Official warnings that touch your route, on the Layers tab and as an alarm.

Forecast models do not issue gale or small craft warnings; weather services do. The app checks the warnings that touch your route and puts them where you will see them.

Where they show

  • On the Layers tab. Tap Wx. Under Warnings on your route, each warning shows its headline and who issued it.
  • As an alarm. A warning on your route raises a weather warning in the cockpit's alarms, so you hear about it without opening the panel.

What counts as your route

The warnings are checked against the route you are planning or sailing: the project's course, or the route you are navigating. With no route of two points or more, nothing is checked and the section is not shown.

Weather by email

Offshore, with only satellite mail, you can still ask for a forecast. On the Get tab, under Held, tap Request by satellite mail. The Weather by email screen sets the Models, the area in degrees, the time and the Resolution, then Compose request mail. If you use another mail app, such as Iridium Mail & Web, Sailmail or OCENS, tap Share request text and send it from there. Requests you have sent are listed under Waiting for replies.

Limits

Warnings come with the weather from Offwind's servers, so they need a connection to update. Keep listening to the official broadcasts.
